Not many Samurai Tachi will become Juyo or Tokubetsu Juyo; I will show you which ones might, which ones will, and how to do it! Read what I have to say on my various sites and examine the signed and unsigned swords with or without koshirae that you see there - then let's talk!
Tachi are the Samurai Swords worn on Court occasions by the Daimyo Lords of Japan. They are distinguished by the fact that they are worn with the cutting edge down, from one or two hangers in the center of the scabbard. Katana, on the other hand, are slid through the belt or Obi, and thus do not have these two hangers as you can see in the offerings below. Only Daimyo are allowed to wear Tachi and there were only about 50 Daimyo in all Japan. Also the Emperor and his relatives wear Tachi as can be seen by the famous painting of the young Shotoku Taishi often see on postage stamps etc. Therefore, since Japan has from a thousand years ago been known as the Land of Gold (Marco Polo etc due to the prevalence of gold over silver and its low cost when traded to China) then many of the top grade Tachi, which I have a few of, are covered in Gold and Silver sometimes solid sometimes skillful mercury-applied gilding but still of wonderful color and quality. It is not always easy to separate the two, but since we are not melting them down I encourage you to consider the beauty of the metalwork, the skill, the amazing hand made metalworking abilities of Japanese artisans from hundreds of years ago. My Tachi are all old, genuine, Edo Jidai, and real --- not as you see elsewhere for replicas selling for over $20,000 are very common in Japan, and not "Gendai Jidai". It has taken me 36 years to find and separate the few and the best and these are presented below. I know that you will not find this level of quality and rarity anywhere else as I have travelled about 5 million air miles searching for these few. The incredibly beautiful examples below cost more, but you cannot find samurai swords like these elsewhere; they took me 36 years to find !!!

Again, this Tachi seen below is something no one else has, since it took me 34 years to find it: all silver full matching mounts including the handle the nanako the tsuba and all 6 washers, the tachi hangers the kojiri and much more. Then the scabbard is beautiful 200 year old (not modern repor like so many I have seen) gold lacquer with litlle flowers of gold foil delicately inlaid ... heads and shoulders above the other swords (katana not tachi) being offered inside Japan for about the same price!

This is a wonderful, perfect, Edo, full Silver and Gold matching Tachi Koshirae with blade, extremely rare to find one in this condition, gold foil flower petals inlaid in the gold scabbard, "Nanatsu-gane full and complete (almost never seen), from my collection, perfect in every way ... The handle is silver made in the imitation of ray skin Nanako (covered with small granulation each dot made by hand and without imperfection, a marvel of Japanese metal working skills, fully matching and complete from top to bottom no modern fake replacements added anywhere, USD $27,500

Shinto Yoshimichi School Kanemichi Katana: Interested in Sudareba? Have one? Most collectors do not have a single good example in their collection. Well, this is an Ubu, signed, Jo Saku example with a Kiku and an Ichi on the tang ... and in a nice Kinko Koshirae. Founder of the Sanpin school and should become a Juyo-to.

Wakizashi JRM#15) Juyo Koho Kinko mounted famed Meisho signed all matching gold and shakud wakizashi: Omori Eishu (Mei Saku) signed in gold, mounted fully matching Kinko Koshirae Wakizashi. The Wakisashi should easily go Juyo Koshirae as one similar previously has done so ... although this one is better. Blade is good too, rated Jo Saku and signed and Ubu.
